Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary was designed by John Haviland and opened on October 25, 1829. Dubbed the “Pennsylvania System,” it encouraged solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitation.

Richly appointed with fine furniture and luxuries, including a cabinet radio, the one-time home of notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone belies the principals of a prison designed to stimulate fear and remorse in the hearts of its inmates. (ESP 2)

Considered to be the world’s first true penitentiary, a name derived from the word “penitence.” Each cell includes a single glass skylight intended to represent the “Eye of God” and meant to remind prisoners that God was always watching them. (ESP 4)
